History
of Buddhism |
| The history of Buddhism
religion dates back to the year 580 BC, which started
with the birth of Buddha Siddhartha Gautama. Born
in Lumbini, which is in the Kapilavastu district of Nepal, Siddhartha left
his home at a young age of 29 years, in search of
enlightenment. After going through a life of self-denial,
discipline and meditation, he attained enlightenment,
which resulted in the alleviation of all his pain
and suffering. He then set on a journey of teaching
people the path to enlightenment that would liberate
them from the cycle of life and death. |

Buddhist
Religion |
| Buddhism is a path
of practice and spiritual development, providing
a person with insight into the true nature of life.
Buddhist practices, such as meditation, serve as
the means of changing oneself, in order to develop
the qualities of awareness, kindness, and wisdom.
Buddhism is not about teaching or learning, but
about experiencing. Buddhist ideology does not advocate
the practice of worshipping God in a physical form.
Hence, quite often, it is not really seen as a religion
in the normal sense. The basic tenets of Buddhist
teaching are straightforward and practical - nothing
is fixed or permanent; actions have consequences;
change is possible. It teaches practical methods,
such as meditation, which enable people to realize
and utilize its teachings in order to transform
their experience |

Gautam
Buddha |
| The word 'Buddha'
is a title and not a name in itself. It means 'one
who is awake' (in the sense of having 'woken up
to reality'). It was first given to a man who was born in Lumbini and raised in the small kingdom or principality of Kapilvastu. He did not claim to be a God and
he has never been regarded as such by Buddhists.
He was a human being who became Enlightened, understanding
life in the deepest way possible. |

Indian
Buddhism |
| In India, Buddhism
started with the life of Lord Buddha. He was born
as prince Siddartha in the royal family of the Shakya
Kingdom. However, he left his home in the search
of the real meaning of life. After spending a number
of years in asceticism and meditation, he finally
attained enlightenment under the Bodice tree in
Gaya, Bihar. By 3rd century BC, the religion spread
all over South Asia, through the Mauryan Empire.

Nirvana
Buddhism |
It is believed that
as Lord Buddha moved ahead on the path of Enlightenment,
He remembered all of his previous lives. In Buddhism,
life is considered as a 'samsara', which means continuous
roving. Often known as reincarnation, rather than
rebirth, the theory implies the transfer of the
essence or the soul. It does not follow the law
of causality or dependant origination, like in rebirth.
The main aim of Buddhism is to break away the circle
of samsara and reach a new level, known as Nirvana.
